Oliver Neubrand: the school behind the complete Rottweiler

Vom Hause Neubrand, functional genetics, ADRK selection and a career built between the show ring, tracking and protection work

Oliver Neubrand with a Rottweiler and trophies earned in competition
Oliver Neubrand with one of his Rottweilers and trophies that reflect a career in selection, presentation and working sport.

Some breeders are remembered for an exceptional head, a dominant dam line or a stud capable of stamping type. Some trainers become associated with a single competition pair. In Oliver Neubrand, those two dimensions intersect differently: phenotypic selection, interpretation of genotype, tracking work and character assessment operate as parts of the same system. The result is not simply a catalogue of champions, but a continuity of decisions that can be traced through dogs carrying his own kennel name and through dogs bred elsewhere that he himself handled.

To understand that trajectory, three levels must be separated. The first is breeding: what is fixed, what is discarded and which ancestors reappear in the pedigree. The second is breed selection: ZTP, Körung, orthopedic health, molecular testing and type according to the standard. The third is sporting performance: scenting ability, obedience under pressure, impulse control and the quality of protection work. When those three levels converge, the concept of the “complete Rottweiler” stops being a slogan and becomes a testable proposition.

How to read this report technically

German selection terminology can become confusing when conformation shows, breeding suitability tests and working sport are mixed together. The following matrix defines how each term is used throughout this article.

Concept Technical reading in the article What it allows us to evaluate
Phenotype Observable expression of conformation: proportions, substance, head, topline and underline, angulation, stance, movement, pigmentation and sexual type. How closely the individual matches the standard and visible anatomical function.
Genotype Set of inherited variants and polygenic traits underlying health, temperament, working aptitude and morphology. What the dog can transmit, not only what it shows in the ring.
Linebreeding Planned repetition of ancestors within a pedigree to increase the probability of fixing qualities. It does not automatically mean close inbreeding. Concentration of families and potential hereditary strengths or risks.
ZTP ADRK breeding-suitability test combining breed and character evaluation. Whether a dog meets minimum conformation and temperament requirements to enter the breeding program.
Körung Advanced breeding-stock selection within the German system. A higher level of assessment for dogs intended to influence the breeding population.
IGP / IPO Working sport divided into tracking, obedience and protection. The modern designation is IGP; IPO appears in historical results. Scenting ability, precision, control, stability, drives and work under pressure.
IGP A Tracking. Concentration, scent intensity, systematic work and mental endurance.
IGP B Obedience. Connection with the handler, technical precision, drive, speed and self-control.
IGP C Protection. Search, guarding, grip quality, pressure, out, obedience and stability toward the helper.
TSB Triebveranlagung, Selbstsicherheit, Belastbarkeit. Drive disposition, self-confidence and capacity to withstand pressure.
Prey drive Motivation to chase, capture and possess. Speed, intensity, willingness to work and exercise building.
Defense drive Active response to pressure or threat in a stable dog. Capacity for confrontation and firmness; it must never be confused with insecurity or chaotic aggression.
Full grip Deep, stable and committed grip. Mechanical and nerve quality of prey/protection behavior.

IGP section Maximum Functional interpretation
A – Tracking 100 Scenting ability, method, concentration and persistence.
B – Obedience 100 Precision, drive, speed, stability and control.
C – Protection 100 Search, guarding, pressure, grip, out and obedience.
Total 300 Overall balance of the team across all three phases.

Vom Hause Neubrand: from a family kennel name to a school of selection

The relevance of Vom Hause Neubrand cannot be measured solely by the number of dogs carrying the kennel name. Its historical importance lies in continuity of criteria: preserving breed type, correct masculinity or femininity, functional substance and a usable temperament without turning morphology into an end detached from work. A constant runs through Oliver’s preserved technical interviews: the Rottweiler should not be trained as an imitation of another working breed; its maturation, power and style require progression, motivation, clarity and carefully dosed pressure.

That view also explains why a serious analysis of the program cannot separate conformation from performance. Phenotype must support function; genotype should reduce avoidable risk; character must withstand environment, pressure and control; and selection should demonstrate more than a static photograph. The value of the Neubrand archive lies precisely in allowing those ideas to be tested against results obtained across different generations.

The genetic architecture: dogs that are not isolated chapters

The most revealing feature of the dossier is not the number of famous names, but the connections among them. Some branches cross through generations and allow us to study how a performance dog reappears behind a show champion, or how an influential stud returns to Oliver’s orbit through a descendant bred under another kennel name.

Genealogical axis Documented route Canine-science interpretation
Falco -> Unkas Falco vom Weihungstal x Romy vom Hause Neubrand -> Unkas vom Hause Neubrand Falco did not found the kennel, but entered as a decisive contribution to one of the working branches that consolidated Oliver’s first major competitive period.
Ives -> Vitus Ives vom Hause Neubrand II -> Dascha vom Bochrahmer -> Jeff vom Hause Neubrand -> Vitus vom Hause Neubrand A national working champion reappears behind a dog that later combines top-level conformation, work and selection results.
Vitus -> Balak Vitus vom Hause Neubrand x Xora vom Hause Anin -> Balak vom Hause Anin Breeding influence beyond the kennel name: a son of Vitus reaches the Klubsieger title.
Vitus -> Malte Vitus vom Hause Neubrand -> Dea vom Weiltal -> Malte vom Weiltal Through the dam line, Malte brings Oliver back to one of the most emblematic sires in his program.
Rudi -> Klabi Rudi vom Hause Neubrand III -> Pino vom Kressbach -> Klabautermann von der Drachenwand A Neubrand line reappears in a dog bred outside the kennel and acquired by the Neubrand family.
Vitus -> Klabi Vitus vom Hause Neubrand -> Locke vom Brandauerweg -> Austria von der Drachenwand -> Easy von der Drachenwand -> Klabautermann von der Drachenwand The maternal branch brings Vitus back in; Neubrand promotional material presents Klabi as a direct descendant of Vitus.

Unkas vom Hause Neubrand: the first major sporting benchmark

Unkas is decisive because he turns philosophy into top-level competition. His pedigree brings in Falco vom Weihungstal, but the journalistic value of the dog lies in the partnership with Oliver: he not only reaches Germany’s highest national competition, but returns to compete and work internationally. Protection work, in particular, repeatedly appears as one of the technical signatures of that period.

Ives vom Hause Neubrand II: tracking precision and power in protection

Ives is the dog who confirms that Oliver’s first championship was not an unrepeatable event. The technical interest of his major performance lies in the score distribution: perfect tracking and nearly perfect protection, with comparatively more room in obedience. It is a very clear snapshot of the functional profile Oliver could bring to a national final.

Vitus vom Hause Neubrand: where phenotype, work and reproduction meet

Vitus occupies a special place because he allows three levels of selection to be observed simultaneously. In the ring he represents breed type and structural quality; in work he shows that the rewarded phenotype was not disconnected from function; and as a sire he leaves descendants who reappear in later champions. His importance therefore should not be reduced to a photograph of a World Winner: the real interest lies in the sum of selection, performance and transmission.

Balak vom Hause Anin: Vitus’s imprint beyond the kennel name

Balak matters because he helps avoid a common mistake: confusing genetic influence with authorship of the breeding. He was not bred under Vom Hause Neubrand, but as a son of Vitus he shows how a Neubrand line can be expressed in an outside program and reach a top conformation distinction. When evaluating sires, this kind of evidence carries more weight than merely accumulating the sire’s own titles.

Rudi vom Hause Neubrand III: show, selection and work without confusing the handler

Rudi is fundamental to understanding continuity in the program, but he also establishes an important journalistic rule: a dog’s success and Oliver’s personal record are not synonymous. Rudi belongs to the history of Neubrand breeding and ownership, while the IGP III result documented here was achieved with another handler. Preserving that distinction strengthens, rather than weakens, the credibility of the report.

Klabautermann von der Drachenwand (“Klabi”): the young successor reconnecting Rudi and Vitus

Klabi is especially interesting because he was not born under the Neubrand kennel name, yet enters the family’s orbit with a genetic combination that brings two key names together again. On the paternal side he descends from Rudi; on the maternal branch Vitus reappears. Added to this is a broad panel of genetic tests that expands the assessment beyond the simple absence of dysplasia. From the perspective of a modern breeding program, that information supports better-informed decisions about recessive risks without mistaking a favorable molecular panel for an absolute guarantee of polygenic health.

Vitus in the maternal line Adds continuity with a sire proven in the ring, selection and work, although trait transmission must be judged through progeny rather than the ancestor’s reputation.

Malte vom Weiltal: Vitus returns through the dam line and the sporting story reaches its peak

Malte best synthesizes the thesis of this report because he joins sporting biography with genealogical continuity. He was not bred by Neubrand, but his dam descends directly from Vitus. That circumstance reveals something unusual in such a long career: the handler returns to the international elite with a dog whose pedigree leads back to one of the central sires of his own history.

Oliver Neubrand as Hundeführer: much more than dogs carrying his own kennel name

A purely genetic reading would underestimate Oliver as a trainer. The reconstruction of results shows that he was able to take dogs from different backgrounds to national and world-level competition. Methodologically, that matters: when a handler repeatedly achieves high performance with dogs of different genotypes, ages and styles, the evidence increasingly points to training and handling competence that does not depend on a single exceptional individual.

Training and trial results that demonstrate breadth of handling

Local trials and qualifiers do not replace a championship, but they are useful for studying preparation patterns. They show Oliver working with different dogs, title levels and scoring profiles. In particular, they reveal the recurrence of high tracking scores and his ability to advance more than one dog toward upper-level IGP at the same time.

A technical constant: high tracking scores with different dogs

In a single competition pair, an extraordinary tracking score may simply reflect individual aptitude. When the pattern reappears with different dogs and in different championships, a methodological explanation gains weight. It does not by itself prove the existence of a closed “school,” but it justifies asking about aptitude selection, motivation building, nose intensity, pace, stress management and correction criteria.

The archaeology of the record: what is settled and what remains open

The research recovered a seminar résumé summarizing an early stage of Oliver’s career. The document is valuable because it provides a cumulative count, but it cannot replace the original score sheets. The article therefore distinguishes between reconstructed participations, pending data and later results that fall outside that historical count.

Block declared in earlier résumé Reconstruction status Detail
ADRK DM VPG – 11 participations declared at the time of the résumé Partial 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010 are identified; if the flyer count is accurate, four additional participations must fall before 2003.

What all of this means for breeding and the working standard

Phenotype without function is an incomplete picture

The Rottweiler described by the German standard is not an ornamental molosser. Power must be accompanied by sufficient agility, a rear assembly capable of driving, a front capable of absorbing and projecting movement, a stable topline and balance that permits work without unnecessary mechanical expenditure. An excessively heavy dog may impress in a stack yet be functionally penalized; a dog that is too light may move easily but lose substance, masculinity and breed type. The program that emerges from the Neubrand archive seeks a middle ground: useful mass, a breed-typical head, sufficient bone, developed chest and locomotion capable of sustaining real activity.

Genotype: visible selection and invisible selection

The genetics of a kennel cannot be evaluated by counting champions carrying its own name. What matters is what a sire produces from different dams, which traits persist outside the kennel, and which faults reappear when a family is concentrated. In that sense, Vitus becomes more informative when Balak, Dea and Malte are studied than when only his own titles are listed. Likewise, Klabi will only be properly evaluable as a sire when there is a sufficient sample of mature progeny with orthopedic, character, conformation and working data.

Linebreeding, inbreeding and responsibility

Linebreeding can increase phenotypic predictability, but it also concentrates undesirable alleles. Modern analysis therefore combines pedigree, coefficients when available, family history and molecular testing. Tests for JLPP, LEMP, NAD, DM or MTM allow specific variants to be managed; they do not make a dog “genetically perfect.” Hip and elbow status, longevity, immunity, temperament and many morphological traits remain multifactorial or polygenic.

Work as a selection filter

A high IGP score does not by itself prove that a dog is the best breeding prospect; it does provide information that a show-ring photograph cannot. Tracking exposes concentration and persistence; obedience reveals relationship, pressure tolerance, precision and recovery; protection tests drives, confidence, grip and control. The combination is especially valuable when the dog also passes breeding-selection filters and retains anatomy compatible with the standard.

The helper and reading the dog

Oliver’s experience as a Schutzdiensthelfer matters because protection work is not simply about “making a dog bite.” A good helper reads thresholds, conflict, prey, defense, grip quality, recovery and the ability to withstand pressure without creating insecurity. His documented trajectory with dogs of different styles suggests practical knowledge that goes beyond handling one individual and helps explain why protection repeatedly appears as a strong phase at different points in his career.

Documentary sources and verification hierarchy

The report prioritizes primary or institutional sources for results and registrations. Secondary sources are retained when they preserve historical data unavailable in today’s digital archives, and they are explicitly identified so that the reader can distinguish documented certainty from reconstruction.

Points to confirm directly with Oliver before closing the edition

The digital research is sufficiently advanced to write the report, but a historical publication seeking maximum precision should turn the remaining gaps into direct verification rather than speculation. These checks are not part of the six editorial interview questions; they are a prior archival control.

Pending What Oliver should confirm
ADRK DM participations predating the recovered digital era Years, dogs and results of the four participations that would complete the historical count of eleven ADRK DM VPG starts declared in the seminar résumé.
ADRK DM 2003 Dog, A/B/C, total and place; Fax von Tengen is a reasonable hypothesis because of his presence at the VDH DM in the same year, but this must not be published as fact without confirmation.
ADRK DM 2005 A/B/C, total and place for Unkas vom Hause Neubrand.
ADRK DM FH Year, dog and result of the participation cited in the historical résumé.

Editorial conclusion: a career that can be measured without turning it into promotion

The stature of a canine-sport career is not demonstrated by piling up adjectives. It is demonstrated when the archive withstands scrutiny. In Oliver Neubrand’s case, the evidence shows repeated results with different dogs, the ability to compete both within and beyond his own kennel name, visible genetic transmission through several branches, and a philosophy that tries to keep together what the market often separates: breed type and utility.

Vitus is probably the most complete symbol of that idea because he brings together conformation, work, selection and reproduction. Malte represents the contemporary culmination because he brings Oliver back to that genetic line and carries it onto the highest sporting stage. Klabi, by contrast, should be read as a prospect still under evaluation: his true value will be determined by maturity, work, selection and progeny, not solely by an extraordinary youth campaign. That distinction among reputation, evidence and projection is precisely what a specialist publication should preserve.

The article is therefore ready for one final layer that no archive can replace: Oliver’s own voice. The closing questions are not designed to ask him for a list of titles, but to invite the protagonist to explain decisions, lessons and selection criteria that only he can provide.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Oliver Neubrand?

Oliver Neubrand is a breeder, Hundeführer, trainer and protection-work helper associated with the Vom Hause Neubrand kennel name and a school of functional Rottweiler selection.

What is Vom Hause Neubrand?

Vom Hause Neubrand is the family kennel name examined here as a continuous selection program combining breed type, health, character and working ability.

Which dogs are central to Neubrand history?

Documented dogs include Unkas vom Hause Neubrand, Ives vom Hause Neubrand II, Vitus vom Hause Neubrand, Rudi vom Hause Neubrand III, Balak vom Hause Anin, Malte vom Weiltal and Klabautermann von der Drachenwand.

Why is Vitus vom Hause Neubrand important?

Vitus brings phenotype, work and reproduction into the same analysis: he recorded show and working results, and his influence reappears in descendants and later generations.

How are Vitus and Malte vom Weiltal related?

Vitus is Malte's maternal grandsire through Dea vom Weiltal. This relationship reconnects a central Neubrand line with Oliver's contemporary sporting career.

What are ZTP and Körung?

ZTP is the ADRK breeding-suitability test combining breed and character evaluation. Körung is an advanced selection level for breeding stock in the German system.

What does IGP evaluate?

IGP evaluates tracking, obedience and protection, providing evidence about concentration, precision, control, stability, drives and work under pressure.

Why does the article distinguish breeder, owner and handler?

Because a dog's results are not attributed to Oliver as Hundeführer unless the source explicitly identifies the handler.

Email interview with Oliver Neubrand – six editorial questions

No. Questions for Oliver Neubrand
1 Your family began breeding Rottweilers under the name “vom Hause Neubrand” in 1976. Looking back over fifty years, which qualities of the Rottweiler have you refused to compromise on, despite the changes the breed has undergone?
2 You achieved major results with very different dogs across different generations — Unkas, Ives, Vitus and now Malte. What did each of these dogs teach you as a trainer, and in what way did each one change your approach to the next?
3 Vitus vom Hause Neubrand was exceptional because he combined major show achievements — including FCI World Winner and ADRK Klubsieger — with very high working scores, including 289 points in IPO3. In your opinion, what made Vitus special, both genetically and as an individual dog?
4 Malte vom Weiltal is a grandson of Vitus through his mother, Dea vom Weiltal. How important was this genetic connection when you chose Malte, and which qualities of Vitus, if any, do you recognize in Malte today?
5 Across championship-level performances, you have repeatedly achieved exceptional tracking scores with different dogs — Fax, Unkas, Ben, Ives, Adonis and Malte. Is there a specific philosophy or training system behind this consistency in tracking?
6 In Ecuador we follow your career and the work of Vom Hause Neubrand very closely, and there is a community of Rottweiler enthusiasts who deeply value the German breeding and working tradition. To close this interview, if possible, could you send a short video greeting to all Rottweiler lovers in Ecuador? And, from your experience, if you were asked to help improve the breed in a South American country such as Ecuador, what would you prioritize in the selection, breeding and working development of our dogs?
